Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for Kids – What to Know
Things to Know About Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Classes
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for Kids – What to know. Are you thinking about signing your kids up for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but not sure where to start?
This is a quick guide to understanding kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Classes.
Things to Consider For Kids BJJ
#1: Balance between self defense, technique, and play time/games
At our school we organize our classes into self defense, technique training, and then games and play time. We find that if you only focus on techniques and training, the kids get bored quickly and don’t want to keep attending. So when you are thinking about kids BJJ classes, it is important to consider the way the school composes their classes.
#2: Discipline and Mindfulness Training
Studies show that having kids focus their mind and attempt to be disciplined in a contained environment help them in every area of their lives. It is important when considering classes for you kids to take a look at the amount of time and effort the school puts into focusing on being mindful and practicing discipline.
#3: Respect For Others
Some schools have abandoned this tradition all together – they feel that those lessons are “old.” But there are schools who still include lessons on respect for others and respect for oneself as part of their core curriculum. Fusion Academy always incorporates time in classes for life lessons on respect of self and respect of others.
#4: Friendly Environment
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Schools are like people in that they all have their own unique personality. Some martial arts schools are nearly like bootcamp in their strict adherence to discipline. Some schools are extremely “loose” in their organization. Some schools focus heavily on having your kids attend martial arts tournaments. At Fusion we find that a healthy mix between the extremes is the best for teaching Jiu Jitsu to Kids.
#5: Culture
This might play into environment, but the culture of the school matters. Some schools are like a “fight club” while other schools are so “laid back” that it is tough to see if anything is being accomplished. Fusion Academy is definitely not a fight club and we do not promote that type of environment. But we are serious about our craft and teaching proper Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to kids and students of all ages.
#6: Is My Kid Going to Learn to Defend Themselves
Yes – Brazilian Jiu Jitsu focuses on using techniques that are incredibly effective in hand combat situations. We do not shy away from sparring or the physical aspect of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Our students know how to defend themselves and we incorporate lessons about “when” to defend oneself (or others).
At Fusion Academy, we offer Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes for kids at our Salt Lake City Location. We have classes for kids from 4-6 that we call Little Samurai, and then we have kids classes for ages 6 to 15.
