In addition, the Guard position, which is considered the central position in all of Jiu Jitsu, is ideally understood from training with the Gi. The Guard position is a perfect for the beginner to learn the basics and learn how the the arms and legs can work together through a standard Collar/Sleeve style Guard. Indeed the most basic Guard position with one hand in the collar, the other controlling a sleeve and a foot on the bicep, has been the primary Gi game used by many world champions.
It is tru that training in the Gi for a beginner, can be almost overwhelming with the many chokes and grips that one can use. But as the beginner progresses, it creates a dynamic environment of being constantly aware of attacks and and stabilizing positions that the Gi. For the beginner, the mind should always be sharpening the defenses and learning the ever critical survival skills that will help one train Jiu Jitsu for many years.
